  • Introduction

    North Metropolitan TAFE is one of Australia's largest training institutes and the primary deliverer of higher-level technical and professional qualifications in Western Australia, with a long and proud history spanning 116 years. North Metro teaches over 32,000 students every year in a range of around 400 nationally accredited courses.

    North Metropolitan TAFE is registered as a Higher Education Provider that can deliver Diplomas and Associate Degrees which are equivalent to the first and second year of University Bachelor Degrees. Don't waste your time doing an enabling course that doesn't count towards a degree. By studying North Metropolitan TAFE's Higher Education courses you will confidently join in the second year of a University Bachelor Degree armed with the academic skills you need.

    North Metropolitan TAFE has several campuses throughout the city including:

    Since its inception as the Balga Technical School in the early 1970s, our Balga campus has developed into a major centre for building and construction training across a range of areas, specialising in builder registration qualifications, bricklaying, plumbing, stonemasonry and wall and floor tiling, to name just a few. Our contemporary equipment provides students with a competitive edge in the training arena and ensures they will continue to receive industry-relevant training. We also provide training in areas such as community services, business and business administration, computing and information technology and hairdressing.

    This state-of-the-art facility is the main campus for trades training in Perth's northern corridor and is accessible via bus service from Clarkson train station. This campus offers training programs in bricklaying, plastering, tiling, carpentry, joinery, metal fabrication and electrical trades. The design includes dedicated training workshops and open spaces for each trade. It delivers trades training in a real world environment to ensure our students have exposure to different disciplines and learn to work collaboratively on projects.

    East Perth
    The East Perth campus is located close to cafes, shops and public transport, and the free city CAT buses. East Perth campus is TAFE's Resources Industry precinct and offers programmes of great importance to West Australia's development including: sustainability and renewable energy, building and construction, mining, surveying, science and technology. Other programs also located at East Perth include Digital Content, Science, Resources and Environmental, and an important segment of our large number of Engineering programs - Electronics, Computer Systems Engineering and Networking as well as Electrical Trades.

    Joondalup (Kendrew Crescent)
    North Metropolitan TAFE's Joondalup campus enjoys a tranquil lakeside location in the heart of the city, one of the fastest growing regions in Western Australia. Set amidst birds, kangaroos and colourful native flora, you'll instantly notice a freshness and buzz that reflects its surroundings. It is only a short walk from Joondalup's rapidly growing central business district, Lakeside Shopping Centre and very conveniently, Joondalup Bus/Train Station, connecting you to Perth City in less than 25 minutes.

    Joondalup (McLarty Avenue)
    North Metropolitan TAFE's new Health and Wellness Training facilities allow extra training to be delivered, particularly at Certificate IV and Diploma levels, enhancing students' training in nursing, fitness and recreation, sports, beauty therapy and allied health assistance. The simulation hospital gives students studying to become enrolled nurses a strong understanding of what it's like to work in a hospital environment. It is fully functional and has the capabilities to provide real support in case of an emergency. It is located within a five minute walk from Joondalup Train and Bus Station, right next to Joondalup Lakeside City Shopping Centre.

    Leederville campus is located in the heart of Leederville, a vibrant, inner-city suburb minutes away from the Perth city centre, close to cafes, restaurants, shops, recreation facilities and public transport. Leederville houses the Community Learning Centre, the centrepiece for our Human Services precinct. The Centre is located in a light-industrial, heritage building and provides training to over 4,000 students annually in a range of programs including Community Services, Children's Services, Aged Care, Disability Services, Youth Work and Mental Health. The warehouse building, a dynamic learning space can be transformed into a variety of learning environments. Also known for its focus on music, the campus houses an industry standard professional recording studio and live performance venue with full staging, lighting and sound production.

    Surrounded by the Blackadder and Woodbridge creeks in the heart of Perth's Swan Valley region you'll find North Metropolitan TAFE's Midland campus. At Midland, our courses focus on the following areas of expertise:

    Horticulture and land management are also offered at Midland with students having access to an operational nursery and a conservation and land management site.

    Mount Lawley
    Mount Lawley campus is conveniently located near the Beaufort Street cafe strip and close to public transport. The campus is known for its focus on health services, and houses a simulated hospital learning environment.

    Oral Health Centre (Nedlands)
    All of our dentistry courses are run from the Oral Health Care Centre of Western Australia (OHCWA) The Centre is an alliance between North Metropolitan TAFE, the University of Western Australia and Curtin University. OHCWA is part of the University of WA site and provides state of the art training equipment, facilities and expertise in the field of dentistry. Our students gain hands-on experience in a modern simulated dental surgery setting.

    Perth (Northbridge)
    The vibrant Perth campus is located in the centre of the cultural area of Northbridge and close to the heart of the city. The Perth campus has seven buildings all located in and around Aberdeen Street, just off William Street, Northbridge. As the largest campus, Perth comprises of four main buildings, each with excellent facilities. Known as the Knowledge Industries Precinct, the campus houses centres of specialisation in:

    • Travel and Tourism
    • English Language and other languages
    The opening of a new $62 million dynamic training facility at 30 Aberdeen Street has completed our redevelopment of its city campus linking all of the buildings in the precinct. The building houses training portfolios for the key skill areas of engineering, architecture design and building and programs for the lifestyle industries including high tech massage and beauty therapy treatment rooms.

    How to Apply
    Applications for our Higher Education courses at North Metropolitan TAFE must be submitted to State Training Admissions.

    Applications for Semester 1 2018 open in September 2017. To apply visit:

    FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible Higher Education Diploma students to pay their tuition fees. Under this scheme you take out a loan from the Commonwealth Government to pay your fees upfront. You will then start repaying the loan through the taxation system when your income exceeds a set level.
